INSTRUCTOR/HOST STATEMENT

In designing this workshop I have attempted to satisfy the thirsts that all of you must have to learn more about your art, the medium of pastel, and to experience a little part of France. The wonderful aspect of having a teaching studio on the premises is that numerous workshop topics can be offered, from beginning to advanced and the participants can choose the appropriate ones and use the remaining time working at the easel, painting in the garden, or experimenting in the pastel laboratory that will be available at all times. The instructor and assistant will always be available for personal assistance in both your artistic and personal needs.

The home dinners, as well as all the excursions have been chosen to help you experience the local flavor of France that is not evident from a tour bus. This particular region of France, while a very big french tourism destination, isn’t as highly visited by English speaking tourists, so, guides will be added to our group from time to time. The cities I have chosen are not so large that anyone who chooses to slip away and wander will not feel intimidated. Travel will be provided by a professional transportation service except for the trip to Paris which will be by public train.

You may choose to participate in all of the planned classes and excursions or you may decide to take some time for yourself to relax, sleep late, read a book, walk in the woods, or ride a bike to the surrounding villages. You can cut and arrange the roses for the house, wander into the kitchen and watch the cook (she doesn’t speak English) or take the basket to the local farms for fresh eggs and salad. Or choose to just sit. Consider yourself a guest, as well as family, with nothing expected of you but to enjoy the time and make yourself at home.

Whether you return to the states exhausted, having taken part in every class, excursion, and every extra minute in the studio or balance your stay with rest and relaxation as top priority, my hopes are that you leave La Bonne Etoile inspired. Inspired in your art and your spirit, having acquired new skills in creativity and foreign travel.

Note: All the participants from previous workshops recommended that the workshop be extended for three additional days. I am offering the option of either the short format or the longer format for the June workshop as I wanted to provide an option for those with time constraints. However, the longer format proved to be more productive as everyone had obtained their “landscapist legs” and could handle the logistics of setting up on location easier as the workshop progressed. The July-August workshop is offered only in the longer format.

Payment for deposit and land costs must be by check, sorry, credit cards are not accepted.

What is the cancellation policy?

In the event of cancellation, payment will be refunded, less the following: up to September 1, 2004, 50.00 Euros per person, September 1-September 15, 2004 , 250.00 Euros per person, after September 15, no refund unless there is a waiting list and place can be filled. In this case the 250.00 Euros charge will apply.

Do I need a passport?

Yes, travel to France and your return to the states, requires a valid passport. You should begin now to obtain your passport as it can take up to five weeks to obtain and may be required at the time of airline ticket purchase. Be sure to check your existing passport dates carefully and allow yourself plenty of time to renew if necessary. Airline travel requirements are very strict on this issue.

I do not speak French, will I need to?

France is not geared to the non French speaking tourist, you will be sent a detailed package before your arrival with step by step instructions upon your arrival in France. You will be accompanied at all times with someone to assist you unless you choose to venture out, which is encouraged.

Will the trip require much physical exertion?

For most of the painting locations chosen, the bus will be very close at hand. If you should choose to paint on location in Troyes, Provins, or Sens you will be expected to carry your supplies with you. Europe in general is more physical than the United States, there are required steps in the metro, train stations, and some museums. Unfortunately, this trip is not wheelchair accessible. La Bonne Etoile has one flight of stairs to the bedroom area.

What about my air travel?

You will need to make your own arrangements for air transportation to Paris.. It is advised that you watch the rates carefully, as good rates go very quickly. It is hard to guess what you may find as the rates ranged from $380.00 to $1200.00 in the spring/summer of 2004. Cheaper rates may be found by flying through cities other than Paris but you need to weigh the savings by the inconvenience and hidden expenses of negotiating another airport. Direct flights to Paris from the United States are offered by Delta, American, Northwest, US Air, AirFrance, TWA, Continental. For anyone flying on frequent flyer miles, early booking is essential.

Can I extend my trip or come earlier?

Yes, the length of the workshop was chosen with the thought that participants may want to plan more days to their overseas trip. Costs will be quoted depending on services desired during that time.
